Posted 57 photos from day 5, including my first ever sighting of an Osprey. Interesting thing is that I heard the splash and pointed the camera at a distant spec, but only after I had processed the photo on the big computer at home that I realised it was an Osprey. It's not the best photo, but I reackon it could have been over 300m away so I think I did well to see anything at all.

I had planned to post these from Scotland each day but my old laptop was just not powerful enough to process the huge files from my R5. On the other hand, processing them at home does have the affect of seeming to prolong the holiday. Posted 12 photos from day 1 of the holiday.

Where have I been for the last few months? Still taking photos, but I have just been posting them on Instagram and A Year With My Camera (AYWMC). Plus I've been getting more involved with photography at work (King's Rochester), and there are only so many hours in the day. However, with a new holiday to Scotland to look forward to in a few weeks, it's time to get back into the habit of posting here.

Decided to split the old View from the House page into three - one for birds, one for aircraft, and one for everything else.

Renamed the section including the panoramic photos and moved it up the list as I have started to re-edit these photos using the DxO nise reduction software.

Main news is that I have fixed the problem with excessive noise on the raw photos after importing into Lightroom. There is a new utility called DxO PureRAW that you can use to process RAW files before working with them in another program. I don't know whether Adobe will eventually catch up and fix the problem but until then I will be using this every for every photo I publish here or on Instagram, it really is that good.
A few more photos added, including a couple of new 32 x 9 panoramics and a lucky shot as a plane passed very close to the moon.
Tue 13th April
Added a few more photos, including Ellie's recent baby shower (password protected). A few other cosmetic changes. This one might run for a bit - I've been noticing a surprising amount of noise in the photos when viewing in Lightroom. After doing some trawling around the web and a bit of testing, it looks like the raw processor in Lightroom is a long way from optimised for CR3 files on the R5. Apparently if they are processed in Canon's own DPP software they look a lot better, although Lightroom is better at just about everything else. Until Adobe comes up with a solution, I think I'm going to have to do a lot more testing to get the most out of Lightroom with the new camera.

I've taken the plunge, partly inspired by my new job at the King's School Rochester, and bought a new camera. I now own a Canon EOS R5 plus an RF 50mm f/1.8 STM and an RF 600mm f/11 IS STM. I really wanted the RF 24-240mm f/4.0-6.3 IS STM as well but that will have to wait until it is back in stock. I'm still learning all the new features (this might take a while) and have started to edit my first photos. Some of them will appear here shortly.

Merged the old One-A-Week and One-A-Day sections into a more general Photo Critique section. Plus a few tweaks around the site, including updating the Technical Stuff page.
Fri 5th March
My previous projects trying to do a detailed critique of a photo once a week, or attempting the infamous one-a-day challenge were not that successful, so I have replaced them with a Photo Critique page. I will use this to occasionally write in detail about a particular photo. To my surprise, I have found that this is something I enjoy doing - I think it helps me understand the photographic process better, should make my photos better over time and may be something that others find interesting or educational.

I decided the old layout of the site didn't match my latest plans for regular updates, so I had a rethink about how to change it. To start with, I have removed the old updates page and replaced it with this Blog page. I am going to use this page to include notifications of my latest posts and any creative thoughts I might have. The latter content probably won't be of much interest to anyone else, but may be fun (or depressing) to look back over time to see how my aspirations and achievements turn out.
